willow earned a BA in Studio Art with concentrations in sculpture and photography in 1982 and an MFA in Sculpture in 1987 from the University at Albany.
In 1988 willow received a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts and that same year was awarded a residency at Yaddo, an artist retreat in Saratoga Springs, NY. The following year willow received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation sponsored by the estate of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. This grant allowed willow
to work as an artist for a year without needing an outside income.
willow has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in the United States and was included in a traveling exhibition that toured internationally. Numerous awards and purchase prizes accompanied these exhibitions.
From the late eighties until 2002, willow worked as a gallery director and curator for 2 regional arts councils in upstate New York and also served as Curator/Gallery Director to Foreman Gallery at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. For several years, willow taught courses in 3-D Design and Sculpture at the State University of New York at Oneonta.
Willow spends part of the year in the town of Maryland, NY, with artist partner Katharine Kreisher. The rest of their time is spent in Truth or Consequences, NM.
In 2007 willow, formerly known as John Wineland, legally changed his/her name and began a long journey that continues today. Gender nonconforming is willow’s preferred identifier.
